HC Deb 07 March 1961 vol 636 cc248-9
35. Mr. Gourlay

asked the President of the Board of Trade what new industrial enterprises planned for Fifeshire are likely to be in production by 1962; what is the estimated increase in employment these new enterprises will produce; and what proportion of the new jobs provided will be for youths under 18 years of age.

Mr. N. Macpherson

Nine, including five expansions to provide 562 jobs.

Mr. Gourlay

That is an extremely disappointing Answer which is in line with all the other Answers the hon. Gentleman has given this afternoon. At present in Kirkcaldy there are fifty unemployed young persons below the age of 18. Some of them have not had a job since they left school. Is the hon. Gentleman aware that in the main industry in Kirkcaldy, linoleum, there is a considerable amount of redundancy and short-time working? Will he take positive and drastic steps to ensure that young people who leave school in 1962 have employment?

Mr. Macpherson

We are doing our best in that respect, and so are the Minister of Labour and the Secretary of State for Scotland.
