HC Deb 28 February 1961 vol 635 cc1352-3
14. Mr. Jeger

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the need for more financial support for provincial theatres and for touring operas; and whether he proposes to increase the grant to the Arts Council for these purposes.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

I must ask the hon. Member to await the publication of the Class IV Estimates, which will show the size of the grant for the Arts Council in 1961–62.

Mr. Jeger

Will the Chancellor bear in mind that the Conservative Manifesto for the 1959 General Election said that particular attention would be given to the needs of the provinces? Is he aware that provincial theatres are still closing —one has recently shut down in Huddersfield—and that the collapse of the Carl Rosa Opera Company means that the supply of touring opera is very inadequate for the needs of provincial towns?

Mr. Lloyd

I am aware of these considerations.

Sir G. Nicholson

Will my right hon. and learned Friend also bear in mind the need for provincial repertory companies?

Mr. Lloyd

Yes, Sir.
