§ 13. Mr. Liptonasked the Minister of Labour how many unemployed are registered at the Brixton Employment Exchange; and what percentage this represents of the working population in the area covered by this exchange.
§ Mr. P. ThomasAt 16th January, 2,305. I regret that it is not possible to provide percentage rates of unemployment for particular parts of London.
§ Mr. LiptonDoes the hon. Gentleman realise that, because he cannot give the exact figures for which I have asked, 11 he is very successfully blurring the issue, because by pushing Brixton and other London exchanges into a large London and South-East Region, which takes us right to the south coast, he therefore arrives at quite a misleading figure when it comes to the percentage of unemployment?
§ Mr. ThomasI can tell the hon. Gentleman that the percentage of unemployment for Greater London is 1.2 per cent. of the insured population. The point is that people in Brixton and Lambeth work all over London. As regards the figures, the number unemployed this month is less than the number a year ago.
