HC Deb 03 February 1961 vol 633 c1325
Mrs. Butler

I ask leave of the House to present a Petition from many thousands of my constituents in Wood Green and Tottenham and other residents in Middlesex.

The Petition, which is in similar terms to others which have been presented this week from London constituencies, draws attention to the extremely grave housing position which also prevails in Middlesex.

It sheweth that many thousands of families are living in overcrowded conditions and that thousands of others are without essential amenities. This situation is primarily due to the decontrol provisions of the Rent Act, 1957, the restrictive effect of the housing policy of Her Majesty's Government, the very high interest rates charged to local housing authorities and prospective owner-occupiers, and the failure of the Government to control land speculation.

The Petition concludes: Wherefore your Petitioners pray that Her Majesty's Government will take immediate steps to deal with this distressing problem. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
