HC Deb 03 February 1961 vol 633 cc1325-6
Mr. Pavitt

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and the permission of the House, I wish to present a Petition which has been signed by thousands of the inhabitants of Willesden, a token number of which will be presented to this House but a much larger number to the Minister of Housing and Local Government.

The Petition sheweth that my constituents are deeply concerned by the terrible housing conditions, the long waiting lists, overcrowding, houses without a bath, hot water or inside toilet, and the difficulties of young married couples. Because the Government have increased interest rates, the local authorities' task has been made even more difficult. In addition, these high interest rates have forced councils to raise rents.

The Petition concludes: Wherefore your Petitioners pray that the Government restore cheap loans to councils to build more houses at reasonable rents. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
