HC Deb 19 April 1961 vol 638 c1143
8. Mr. Hunter

asked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made with the construction of the Hyde Park motor under-pass scheme; and whether he is yet in a position to give an approximate completion date.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Mr. John Hay)

Work on this scheme is proceeding according to plan. It should be completed by about the end of August, 1962.

Mr. Hunter

May I ask the Joint Parliamentary Secretary, in view of the urgent need of relieving traffic congestion in London and restoring the amenities of Hyde Park, whether he and his right hon. Friend will endeavour to speed up completion of this project?

Mr. Hay

No, Sir. This scheme is being run by the London County Council, and work is proceeding according to the schedule laid down in the contract, despite the substantial difficulties of doing this work, because we have to keep the traffic circulating, and despite the extremely serious bad weather experienced in the last few months. [HON. MEMBERS: "When?"] I do not think there is any possibility of speeding up the completion of this project.
