§ 9. Mr. Manuelasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made of the additional housing facilities which will be required in the Dunoon area, arising from the basing of a large number of American naval ratings and their families in that area.
§ Mr. MaclayNo additional housing facilities are likely to be required. Those American naval personnel who may wish to take up residence ashore with their families make their own arrangements to secure furnished accommodation. The remainder—and they comprise the substantial majority—will, of course, be accommodated afloat on the depot ship "Proteus".
§ Mr. ManuelWhile we are delighted that the families will receive all the hospitality and accommodation in the Dunoon area that is necessary, may I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he is aware that this is a popular and attractive tourist centre? If the existing accommodation will be needed for another 400 families, then a necessary lung for people living in Glasgow who need a cheap holiday not far from their homes will be impinged on. I think that some regard should be paid to that point.
§ Mr. MaclayThe hon. Gentleman may not realise that this matter was discussed with the local authorities, who are satisfied that the demand will be marginal in relation to the total accommodation available in the holiday towns within reasonable proximity of the Holy Loch.
