HC Deb 18 April 1961 vol 638 cc948-9
10. Mr. Millan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is satisfied with the present level of recruitment to the fire service in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooman-White

I understand that there is no serious recruiting problem in Soottish fire brigades at the present time.

Mr. Millan

We are glad to hear that. Nevertheless, will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there is considerable dissatisfaction among fire service employees, and, indeed, among other public service employees, about their present rates of pay? In view of the very great importance of maintaining a proper standard of recruitment in the fire service, will he bear that very much in mind when proposals are put to the Secretary of State for Scotland and to the Home Secretary for an inquiry into fire service pay and conditions?

Mr. Brooman-White

We will bear that matter in mind, but the hon. Gentleman will realise that the question of pay is a matter for decision by the National Joint Council for the local authorities fire brigades.
