HC Deb 09 November 1960 vol 629 c1025
31. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Transport the estimated cost of constructing the proposed underground garage in Hyde Park.

Mr. Marples

I understand that the construction cost, for a garage for 1,000 cars, may be something less than £1 million.

Mr. Lipton

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that that adds up to a capital expenditure of £1,000 per car? [An HON. MEMBER: "Jolly good."] Does the right hon. Gentleman seriously think that on that basis this garage can be made a commercial proposition, especially in view of the unhappy experience of the London Wall garage which is only 50 per cent. occupied?

Mr. Marples

Yes, Sir, I think that it would be possible to charge prices similar to those prevailing in the rest of the West End.
