HC Deb 08 November 1960 vol 629 c827
43. Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the Prime Minister if he will instruct Government Departments not to address letters to Hong Kong, China, as this causes resentment in that Colony.

The Prime Minister

The Post Office Guide refers simply to "Hong Kong", which is the correct address. I am satisfied that this is already well known in Government Departments.

Mr. Gresham Cooke

Is my right hon. Friend aware that people in Hong Kong will be pleased that he has been able to give his attention to this little problem, because it raises a great deal of resentment in that patriotic British Colony when letters arrive there indicating that Hong Kong is a member of the Chinese People's Republic?

The Prime Minister

I quite understand the point and, if there are any errors, I shall see that we try to put them right.
