HC Deb 08 November 1960 vol 629 cc826-7
42. Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Prime Minister to what extent, during his recent discussions with President Nasser, he discussed the question of the resumption of normal diplomatic relations between the two countries; when such resumption is likely to take place; and on what basis of acknowledgement of past divergencies this agreement has been arrived at between the two countries.

The Prime Minister

As was announced after my meeting with the President of the United Arab Republic on 28th September at the United Nations, there was agreement between us on the need to make further progress in improving relations. The question of an exchange of Ambassadors is now under discussion between the two Governments.

Mr. Lewis

Can the Prime Minister give us any idea when he will be able to make a further announcement?

The Prime Minister

I hope that this will not be very long delayed.

Mr. Gaitskell

Can the Prime Minister say what is the difficulty in the resumption of normal diplomatic relations? Is it on our side or on their side?

The Prime Minister

We are, of course, in diplomatic relations. At present, we have only the chargés d'affaires. As a result of our discussions, it was agreed that the Foreign Secretary should discuss with the Foreign Minister of the U.A.R. the raising of them to ambassadorial status. I hope that we shall soon be able to reach a satisfactory conclusion to that negotiation.
