HC Deb 07 November 1960 vol 629 c642
36. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what steps he is taking to set up a Government film unit to provide topical news and feature material for overseas television services.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Dr. Charles Hill)

This suggestion is under consideration.

Mr. Mayhew

Is the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster aware that there is an almost insatiable demand for television material in the world today and that this topical news and feature material can provide a first-class way of linking this country with certain other countries? There is a case here for special service.

Dr. Hill

I am aware of the very large demand. We are, as the hon. Gentleman may know, issuing nine newsreels and a great deal of other material each week. But I agree with the general proposition that this represents a form of information for which there is a great and growing demand which we must seek to meet.
