HC Deb 16 May 1960 vol 623 cc916-7
40. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what notification is given to neighbouring farmers when an outbreak of fowl pest takes place.

Mr. John Hare

Poultry keepers within half a mile of the outbreak are visited and the movement of poultry within that area is restricted for at least 28 days. Where there is considered to be a serious risk of spread, the restrictions may be applied to a wider area. Notice is then given through the Press and the B.B.C.

Mr. Hynd

Does the Minister think that half a mile is sufficient? Whose duty is it to visit people within the half-mile?

Mr. Hare

We have found that this is a practical arrangement. It is the duty of my Department to make the necessary arrangements for neighbouring farms to be visited.
