29. Mr. Cronin

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will take steps to subject to taxation sums, at present tax free, which are awarded to senior executives in private industry and commence on retirement or as compensation for loss of office.

The hon. Member will not expect me to anticipate my Budget statement.

Mr. Cronin

While I sympathise with the Chancellor's reply, may I ask him whether he will bear in mind that, while we on this side have pressed for years for action to be taken in this matter, there is even apprehension on his own side of the House about these colossal forms of tax avoidance?
