HC Deb 09 March 1960 vol 619 cc399-400
11. Mr. Holland

asked the Postmaster-General if he is in a position to make a statement about improving co-operation between the Post Office and the general public, with particular reference to the possibility of open days for the sorting offices

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Reginald Bevins)

I am pleased to say that during next week, 14th to 18th March, the Post Office will be "At Home" to its customers. At the invitation of our local head postmasters, people will be visiting sorting offices during our evening rush-to see our problems and how we deal with them—and particularly how co-operation by our customers in clear and correct addressing helps to speed the mail.

Mr. Holland

I thank my right hon. Friend for his full statement. On this question of correct and legible addressing, is he aware that, for example, Hunts, Hants and Herts are often quite indistinguishable one from another and, further, that the letters "Sx" are used as an abbreviation for both the counties of Essex and Sussex?

Mr. Bevins

I will certainly look into those difficult points.

Mr. Driberg

Will the customers be allowed to see the arrangements for tapping and intercepting private telephone calls?

Mr. Bevins

I think the hon. Gentleman is confusing Postal Week with the telephone service.
