HC Deb 03 March 1960 vol 618 c1406
23. Mr. Hendry

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the villages of Braemar and Newtonmore are both within the proposed Highlands and Islands Development District.

Mr. J. Rodgers

Braemar is not, but Newtonmore is, within the proposed Highlands and Islands Development District. This is the position under the Distribution of Industry (Industrial Finance) Act, 1958, and we are continuing it unchanged. Newtonmore is in an area of high unemployment, whilst Braemar is not.

Mr. Hendry

Is it not correct that there is not much difference between these two mountain resorts, apart from the fact that the one which is not officially in the Highlands is at a far higher altitude than the one which is? In view of that, will my hon. Friend reconsider the matter to see whether he can include not only Braemar but the whole of Upper Deeside in the Highlands, where they properly belong?

Mr. Rodgers

Questions about which counties are in the Highlands and Islands should be addressed to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
