HC Deb 01 March 1960 vol 618 c1012
19. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has considered the Report of the Road Research Board of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research on the benefits of reflecting kerbs; and whether he is prepared in new road programmes to include them as an essential contribution to safe motoring.

Mr. Maclay

I have seen the report and I agree that reflecting kerbs or other special means of defining the edge of the road may be useful at bends or where fog is common. I do not consider them essential everywhere.

Mr. Woodburn

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are possibilities of making the kerbs reflect without much additional expense? Surely that would be a very wise thing in the interests of road safety. I think that everyone appreciates the marvellous effect that the reflecting studs in the middle of the road have had towards road safety, and if this could be done at the edge of the roads it would be much better.

Mr. Maclay

My Department and I are very conscious of these considerations and we are in close touch with the Road Research Laboratory on the whole subject.
