§ 18. Miss Herbisonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what facilities for the treatment of rheumatism and rheumatological research are provided in the area covered by the Western Regional Hospital Board.
§ Mr. MaclayFacilities for treatment are available at general hospitals throughout the region. Research is taking place at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. The Regional Hospital Board is at present considering a proposal for the establishment of a special unit for research and treatment.
§ Miss HerbisonIs the Secretary of State aware that the Western Regional Hospital Board has been considering this matter since 1957? Is he aware that there are no facilities for rheumatological research and that since there are many cases of rheumatism in the West of Scotland this lack of facilities is almost a public scandal now in Scotland? What does the right hon. Gentleman intend to do to hurry the decision of the Western Regional Hospital Board?
§ Mr. MaclayAs I think the hon. Lady knows, I have asked the Board to report and I expect the report soon.
§ Miss HerbisonIf it does not come soon, will the right hon. Gentleman insist on getting it? The right hon. Gentleman is Minister of Health for Scotland. Is he aware that most knowledgeable people are extremely worried about this matter?
§ Mr. MaclayI agree that it is extremely worrying, but the Regional Board has a great deal of work in hand. I am sure that it is doing its best to let me have its report as soon as it can.
