§ 26. Mr. Rankinasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he proposes taking to free the River Clyde from pollution.
§ Mr. MaclayI am discussing with the Clyde River Purification Board the question of making an early Order extending to the estuary and other tidal parts of the Clyde the powers which the Board at present exercises in relation to the non-tidal part of the river.
§ Mr. RankinDoes the right hon. Gentleman recollect that the Act has been on the Statute Book for nine years and that during that time pollution in the rivers in his area and in mine has become worse than ever? Will he give a promise that he will expedite this Order with the greatest possible speed?
§ Mr. MaclayThe hon. Member will realise that there are complex problems affecting local authorities and industries and many matters of great importance to be considered, and I think that we are moving as fast in this matter as is reasonable.
