HC Deb 14 December 1960 vol 632 cc547-8
Mr. Wigg

I beg to move, in page 10, line 42, to leave out from "has" to "without" in line 43 and to insert: at the expiration of the period of six months beginning with that date ceased to be in, or been given notice of termination of, that employment This Amendment will not, I think, affect a considerable number of people, but it is designed as a gesture. If there are any whose employment will be terminated as a result of the introduction of the Bill, they should be looked after and dealt with generously. The Government's original proposal was for a period of one month after the coming into operation of the Levy Board. I have proposed the substitution of six months for one month. I do not think anyone will be affected. I hope not, because I believe that the new Levy Board will want people rather than want to dispense with their services. In order that those already employed by the Racecourse Betting Control Board should have a feeling of confidence in the desire of the Board to look after employees, I hope that the Government will find it possible to accept the Amendment.

Mr. Vosper
