HC Deb 26 November 1959 vol 614 c546
23. Mr. du Cann

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will take steps to ensure that imported bacon is marked with the country of origin.

Mr. Godber

The Merchandise Marks (Imported Goods) No. 3 Order, 1934, makes it obligatory for any bacon imported into the United Kingdom to bear an indication of origin. This indication may, at the option of the person applying the mark, be either "Empire" or "foreign", as the case may be, or a definite indication of the country of origin.

Mr. du Cann

Does that rule apply to imported pigmeat which is cured in this country?

Mr. Godber

Yes, Sir. It certainly would apply to any pigmeat which has been imported. Whatever subsequently is done with it, it will still have to bear the name of the country of origin on it.
