HC Deb 26 November 1959 vol 614 cc545-6
22. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in view of the continuing shortage of butter, if he will make a further statement on current imports of butter and on the action he is taking to increase supplies.

Mr. John Hare

The seasonal increase in the rate of imports from New Zealand and Australia has now begun, and supplies continue to arrive from North America. I am glad to say that shipments on the way from Australia and New Zealand alone amount to over 37,300 tons.

Mr. Lipton

Does the hon. Gentleman think this will result in any decrease in the present exorbitant prices being charged for butter?

Mr. Hare

Surely the hon. Member is aware that already there has been quite a change in market prices in the last few days.
