HC Deb 03 November 1959 vol 612 c844
27. Mr. John MacLeod

asked the President of the Board of Trade what action he is taking to bring light industry into Ross-shire, and particularly to Invergordon.

Mr. Maudling

The Board of Trade is anxious to see the introduction of suitable industries in the Highlands and will continue in its efforts to this end.

Mr. MacLeod

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the Highlands are far too dependent upon public works, and that in this area public works are coming to an end? Is he satisfied that his office in Inverness is doing all it can?

Mr. Maudling

I recognise that the provision of employment in the Highlands, and in Scotland generally, is a most important and urgent responsibility of my Department, and I very much welcome any advice or suggestions on this subject.
