HC Deb 12 May 1959 vol 605 cc1032-3
30. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many Scottish islands with a population over 100 remain without a pier adequate for the landing of livestock from steamers.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Lord John Hope)

So far as I am aware, there are nine such islands.

Mr. Grimond

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether the policy on this point laid down in the Labour Government's White Paper on Highland Development remains the policy of the present Government?

Lord John Hope

What I can tell the hon. Member is not relevant in the least to what the Labour Government may or may not have said they wished to do. Of these nine islands, work is proceeding on one of them. There are only four about which nothing so far has been considered, simply because no suggestions have been forthcoming from them.
