HC Deb 03 June 1959 vol 606 c172
19. Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he is aware that no driving tests have been held in Shetland since last October; and if he will ensure that these tests are arranged with at least sufficient frequency to save learners the cost of renewing provisional licences.

Mr. Nugent

Yes, Sir. A programme of tests arranged for February was cancelled because of bad weather. Examiners will be visiting Shetland on 8th June next week to dispose of all test applications at present outstanding. We are arranging for examiners to make at least four visits each year providing the number of applications warrants it.

Mr. Grimond

Will the Minister bear in mind that this is a recurrent trouble and that his Ministry showed a certain reluctance to send examiners to the island of Foula? Will he ensure that these long delays do not occur, because they are most inconvenient in places where a great many people must depend on cars?

Mr. Nugent

I am sorry that the inhabitants of Shetland have had to wait in this way, and we hope to overcome their troubles as soon as possible
