HC Deb 03 June 1959 vol 606 c170
14. Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether his attention has been drawn to a campaign launched by the Traders' Road Transport Association aimed at cutting down the waiting time at the kerbside of commercial vehicles in busy shopping centres; and to what extent this campaign has his support.

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation (Mr. Harold Watkinson)

Yes, Sir. I am delighted at the initiative taken in this matter by the Traders' Road Transport Association, and the code of behaviour issued by the Association as part of its campaign is prefaced by a message of support from me. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland is giving his full support to the campaign in Scotland.

Mr. Robinson

In this connection, will the Minister look at the situation in Great Portland Street, which was turned into a one-way street after pressure from the House? Is he aware that this morning there was a continuous line of vehicles parked on both sides of the street and frequently a third line of commercial vehicles, making it once again almost impossible for buses to go down this street?

Mr. Watkinson

That hardly arises from the Question, but I will certainly ask the London Travel Committee to look at the point.
