HC Deb 08 July 1959 vol 608 c1356
52. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if, on the completion of the Manor Way extension at Whitchurch, Glamorgan, he will forthwith authorise the schemes for bypassing the villages of Tongwynlais and Tails Well; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nugent

The trunk road from the northern end of the Whitchurch By-pass as far as Abercynon will be reconstructed to dual carriageway standards, with by-passes of the built up areas, including Tongwynlais and Taffs Well. The cost of this rebuilding is estimated at about £4¼ million. The plans for the new road are at present being reconsidered to make greater use of abandoned sections of the Cardiff and Rhymney railways, and it is not yet possible to say when the various by-pass schemes can be authorised.

Mr. Gower

Will account be taken of the fact that the full value of the extension of the Manor Way will not be obtained by the public unless it is continued further?

Mr. Nugent

We well knew that, but this is a very difficult route to establish.
