HC Deb 08 July 1959 vol 608 cc1355-6
51. Commander Maitland

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what action is proposed to improve traffic conditions at the Burgh level crossing, now that his investigations have disclosed the true state of affairs there.

Mr. Nugent

To ease road congestion at weekends, the railway management are considering whether they can reduce railway freight movements on Saturdays, and alter the timings of trains to give longer intervals for road users.

Commander Maitland

Now that the roads have been so greatly improved on either side of this level crossing, is it not rather ridiculous not to construct a fly-over so that the benefit of the widening can be reaped?

Mr. Nugent

It would need a good deal more than a fly-over to ease the congestion on this road at week-ends when the holiday traffic is very heavy. If my hon. and gallant Friend will be patient a little longer and let us see what benefit we can derive from reducing freight movements on Saturdays, we may find a considerable improvement there.
