HC Deb 27 January 1959 vol 598 cc860-1
10. Mr. Jennings

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what Government research is undertaken on the hydraulic aspects of structures for hydro-electric schemes.

Mr. H. Nicholls

The Hydraulics Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has undertaken scale-model investigations of hydraulic structures for a number of hydro-electric schemes, principally overseas. The structures have included intakes, sluices, spillways and stilling basins.

Mr. Jennings

First, can my hon. Friend tell me for whom this work is carried out? Secondly, does the station charge for its services?

Mr. Nicholls

In most cases the work is carried out for British firms of consulting engineers, and the charges made by the Hydraulics Research Station are based upon the staff time involved, to which is added the overhead costs.
