HC Deb 27 January 1959 vol 598 c861
11. Mr. Atkins

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what progress is being made towards completion of up-to-date geological maps covering the ironstone field in the East Midlands.

Mr. H. Nicholls

The whole of the field has been geologically surveyed on the scale of six-inches to the mile. Out of the eight geological sheets on a scale of one-inch to the mile covering the Northampton Sand Ironstone Field, three have been published recently and three more are soon to be published.

Mr. Atkins

Can my hon. Friend say whether any progress has been made with the mapping of the Oxfordshire ironstone field, and can he say whether explanatory notes have been published to cover the area?

Mr. Nicholls

Yes. The smaller field of Oxfordshire is an area covered by two one-inch geological sheets. One sheet is being prepared for publication, and a survey on a scale of six inches to the mile of the area covered by the other sheet is now in progress. In addition to the maps, explanatory memoirs dealing with the ironstone fields have been published by the Geological Survey.
