HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 c1337
7. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what new factor arose between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on 20th January which enabled the large-scale security operations in South-West Cyprus to be called off.

Mr. J. Amery

None, Sir. As my right hon. Friend explained on 29th January, the operation ended according to plan.

Mr. Robinson

While not wishing to say anything which might disturb the harmony which has arrived at last in this unhappy affair, may I ask the hon. Gentleman if he will really try to clear up this mystery? At 3 o'clock on the afternoon of 26th January, the Colonial Secretary said that these operations could not be called off. At 6 o'clock they were called off. Is there no communication whatever between the Colonial Office and Nicosia?

Mr. Amery

It would be quite wrong for us in London to try to plan hourly operations.
