HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 cc1337-8
30. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will suggest to the Governor of Cyprus that the discharged and suspended Greek-Cypriot employees of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes and the Royal Air Force should now be re-engaged.

Mr. J. Amery

There have been discussions between the employers and trade union representatives. The authorities hope to start some re-engagement soon.

Mr. Brockway

I welcome that suggestion, but is the hon. Gentleman aware that the Governor has paid a tribute to the trade unions for their co-operation in this matter? In view of the new situation in Cyprus, would not it be a good step to remove the very deep suffering which has been caused by this unemployment by reinstating these men?

Mr. Amery

As I have told the hon. Member, we are already making some progress.

Mr. Paget

Can the hon. Member confirm, as appears in the newspapers, that we have now decided to scuttle as a political authority in Cyprus? If this is to be so, I imagine that our future employment policy will be one of ordinary industrial negotiations.

Mr. Amery

Perhaps the hon. and learned Member will put down a separate Question on the matter.
