§ 15. Mr. Swinglerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will recommend to the Government of Tanganyika the making of a declaration on lines similar to that made by the Kenya Government, that it is the Government's aim to provide adult male workers with a minimum wage sufficient to meet the needs of man and wife.
§ Mr. J. AmeryThe policy of the Tanganyika Government is directed towards providing that minimum wages take account of the needs of the workers' families. An examination of the methods by which the wages of industrial and analogous workers are determined will be undertaken shortly by Professor Jack at the request of the Tanganyika Government.
It would be inappropriate for me to comment further until the Tanganyika Government have been able to consider Professor Jack's report.
§ Mr. SwinglerIf the Kenya Government can make a declaration, about which we were told in answer to a previous Question, saying that it is the policy to provide adult male workers with a minimum wage sufficient to meet the needs of man and wife, why cannot the Tanganyika 1342 Government do the same? In view of the serious strikes which have taken place on the sisal plantations and the unrest in Tanganyika, is not it urgent that something should be done by the Tanganyika Government?
§ Mr. AmeryThe Tanganyika Government will on doubt take suitable account of the Kenya Government's policy when considering Professor Jack's report, but the hon. Member will have learned from his studies that not all Territories are the same.
