HC Deb 12 February 1959 vol 599 c1326
14. Mrs. Castle

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will allow African members of the Kenya Legislative Council to visit the Hola Detention Camp, in Kenya.

Mr. Amery

I would refer the hon. Member to my hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Member for Eton and Slough (Mr. Brockway) on 3rd July, 1958.

Mrs. Castle

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that among innumerable letters on other matters that I have received from detention camps in Kenya, I have had letters from the Hola detainees which point out that some of them, who were tried and given two-year sentences eight years ago, are still being detained on what they say are false allegations? They ask either that they should be brought before a court of law or that, at least, they should have the right to see their own Kenya M.P.s. Will not the Government do something about this scandal?

Mr. Amery

The detainees are continually having their position reviewed.
