HC Deb 08 December 1959 vol 615 cc219-20
36. Mr. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking to increase the amount of official research work done in Scotland.

Mr. Maclay

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for South Angus (Sir J Duncan) on 26th November. My noble Friend the Minister for Science and I had a discussion on this subject with several hon. Members opposite on 3rd December, and I shall continue to keep in close touch with him and other Ministers with regard to Government research work done in Scotland.

Mr. Ross

In view of the continuing loss of science graduates who have been trained in Scotland through the lack of research for which they are fitted in Scotland, will the Secretary of State tell us what he proposes to do about it, other than have discussions?

Mr. Maclay

I propose to continue the search for suitable research projects for Scotland which are under Government control, but nowadays there are not a great many such contracts under Government control. I have had many talks with industrialists about the possibility of their developing scientific research in Scotland.
