§ 18. Mr. N. McLeanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the discontent in the Islands of Skye and Raasay caused by the steamer services provided this summer and autumn by Messrs. MacBrayne's Ltd. for handling the tourist traffic to and from Portree, and livestock to and from Raasay, about which the hon. Member for Inverness has written to him; what representations he has received about the inadequacy of these services; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MaclayAs my hon. Friend will know, I visited these places this summer and discussed these services. I understand that, at a recent meeting, the Highland Panel reached the conclusion that there were inadequacies in the services last summer and doubted whether the improvements proposed for the coming year would meet all the local needs. 1 have asked Messrs. MacBrayne's to consider the Panel's views.
§ Mr. McLeanWhilst thanking my right hon. Friend for his Answer that he has asked the Panel to consider the views—and I hope that he will consider them too—may I ask that when he considers them he will ask MacBrayne's to make new proposals which will prove adequate for next summer's tourist traffic and for the taking of livestock and cattle to and from Raasay?
§ Mr. MaclayAs my hon. Friend knows, I am well aware of the views held in certain parts of the West Highlands on this subject. As soon as I receive Messrs. MacBrayne's comments on the Panel's report, the matter will be given full consideration.
