HC Deb 30 April 1959 vol 604 cc1447-8
20. Mr. Fitch

asked the Minister of Education how many hostels there are in England and Wales for maladjusted children.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Forty-three approved by me.

21. Mr. Fitch

asked the Minister of Education what consideration he has given to the need for a uniform salary scale for wardens of hostels for maladjusted children.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

I regard this as a matter for the wardens and their employers.

Mr. Fitch

Does the Minister agree that people engaged on such important work as this should have professional status, and that pay and conditions of service should not be left to the generosity or otherwise of local authorities?

Mr. Lloyd

Quite a small number of people are involved, and there would be considerable difficulty in laying down standards in this matter.
