HC Deb 28 April 1959 vol 604 cc1103-4
47. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister if, in view of the serious state of unemployment in Scotland, he will take the opportunity during his coming visit to Scotland of discussing the situation with leaders of the Scottish Trades Union Congress.

The Prime Minister

I would always be ready to meet the leaders of the Scottish Trades Union Congress should they wish it.

Mr. Hughes

In view of the very great anxiety about unemployment in Scotland and especially the fear of those now employed that they may be unemployed very shortly, does the Prime Minister not think that it would be a very good thing if he went personally to acquaint himself with the very serious position in the West of Scotland?

The Prime Minister

The hon. Gentleman will, no doubt, have welcomed the recent improvements in the employment position in Scotland, and I hope that those improvements will continue. But, as I say, I shall always be ready to see a deputation from this Congress. There are methods of acquainting oneself with the figures and other facts which are open to me, and I have the advice of all my colleagues concerned, especially the Secretary of State.
