HC Deb 28 April 1959 vol 604 c1073
17. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs if, in view of the shortage of housing sites in Newcastle-under-Lyme and the need to expand the municipal housing programme, he will take steps to secure the mineral valuer's report on George Street forthwith, so that the council and his Department may give immediate consideration to its suitability for rebuilding.

Mr. H. Brooke

I understand that the mineral valuer has already advised the borough council against developing the George Street site with buildings of more than four storeys.

Mr. Swingler

As that is not my information, will the Minister make some further inquiry? Is he aware that my information from the council is that it has been waiting since last August for a full report from the mineral valuer? The council places great importance on the possibility of being able to build on this site. Will he go into the matter because of its great importance?

Mr. Brooke

My information is that the mineral valuer and the National Coal Board met the borough council and discussed the George Street site proposals. The mineral valuer advised the council that because of the site conditions he could not recommend in favour of blocks of flats higher than four storeys. He was not under the impression that the council was expecting any further report from him than that.
