§ 15. Mr. Sorensenasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs, in view of the human problems arising from the removal of young married couples and their families to municipal housing estates a considerable distance away from the parents of those young married couples, whether he will recommend to local authorities sympathetic consideration of the need also to provide accommodation for elderly parents near to the new accommodation of their married children, particularly where such provision would guarantee vacation of property now occupied by the parents and thus be made available for other occupants.
§ Mr. H. BrookeThe transfer of tenants, including elderly people, to houses better suited to them in size or situation has been recommended in a number of reports and circulars to local authorities, and particularly in the report, "Transfers, Exchanges and Rents, "which was commended to local authorities in 1953. Local authorities have been reminded of these recommendations in the report "Councils and their Houses", which I sent to them as recently as 23rd March last.
§ Mr. SorensenHas the Minister any record of the response to those recommendations, particularly in view of the very urgent and human problems embodied in my Question? Has he done anything further than that which he has already stated, and will he state what response there has been?
§ Mr. BrookeI think there has been a steady response. I have communicated with the local authorities as recently as last month about it, but if there is any area or particular housing estate causing anxiety to the hon. Member, I very much hope he will communicate with me so that I can look into the matter.
