§ 35. Mr. J. Johnsonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies under what conditions Achieng Oneko is being detained in Marsabit, Kenya; whether he will consult the Governor of Kenya regarding the reasons why Mrs. Oneko has not been allowed to join her husband; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydAchieng Oneko's detention order has been suspended, and he is now living in restricted residence at Marsabit Township. He occupies a two-roomed, furnished house, and will be paid a subsistence allowance of 100 shillings a month while he is at Marsabit. He is being asked if he wishes his wife to join him and. if he does. this will be arranged.
I will place in the Library a copy of the type of notice which authorises the suspension of his detention order and sets out the conditions of his restriction.
§ Mr. JohnsonIs not the Secretary of State aware that Mr. Oneko and fifteen other detainees at Marsabit are doing no work? They wish to do some work and earn some money. Is the right hon. Gentleman also aware that, as far back as 15th March, the Governor of Kenya talked of Mrs. Oneko corning to join her husband? She has still not done so, and that was over a month ago. What is happening? Will the right hon. Gentleman please expedite the humane act of having this lady join her husband?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydCertainly. There is no difficulty whatever in Mr. Oneko's wife joining him, if they so wish. With regard to the first part of the hon. Member's supplementary question, I was not aware of that, but I will look into it straight away.
