HC Deb 13 April 1959 vol 603 cc639-40
46. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that a German firm, K.T.G. of Frankfort, is advertising climatic pressure chambers for use in the manufacture of missiles; and if he will make representations with a view to ending this contravention of the treaty forbidding Germany to manufacture atomic, bacteriological or chemical weapons.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Robert Allan)

Climatic pressure chambers may be used for a variety of purposes. If the hon. Member will send me a copy of the advertisement I will inquire whether it appears that the chambers advertised are specially designed for use with guided missiles.

Mr. Allaun

I thank the Minister for that reply, and I shall certainly provide the details for him. Does not he think that if these are not atomic weapons they are certainly the next thing to them? Has he noticed the pressure in Western Germany for its industry to produce armaments? Does he approve of that process?

Mr. Allan

The last part of the hon. Member's supplementary question is upon a quite different point, but if he will send me copies of the advertisement to which he has referred I will look into the matter.

Mr. Paget

Will the hon. Member make representations to the Germans to cease manufacturing steel, as steel is also used in atomic weapons?
