HC Deb 19 November 1958 vol 595 c1132
16. Dr. Stross

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will give early consideration to the formation of a branch of the British Council in Morocco.

Mr. Ian Harvey

We are considering the possibility of expanding the British Council's work overseas, but in the foreseeable future, as the hon. Gentleman is aware, the funds available to the British Council are not likely to be sufficient for opening a branch in Morocco.

Dr. Stross

While appreciating the financial difficulty that always faces the extension of this service or of any other service, may I ask the Joint Under-Secretary of State whether he is aware that a branch in Morocco would be generally welcomed, and that it is a very good way of spending our money to show the flag by teaching English and showing our culture in those countries?

Mr. Harvey

I accept everything the hon. Member has said. We will look at the specific problem of the teaching of English. The view he has expressed applies to a large number of other territories. We have to consider them as well.
