HC Deb 18 November 1958 vol 595 c992
18. Mr. Hannan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of health visitors trained in each year since the Report of the Working Party was published in June, 1956.

Mr. J. N. Browne

The number qualifying in 1957 was 87 and in 1958 71; 87 are at present in training.

Mr. Hannan

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this Report indicated that there must be a great increase in the number of health visitors trained for this work and recommended salary increases to attract such visitors? What steps is the Department taking to give some boost to attract workers to this profession?

Mr. Browne

The hon. Gentleman will be happy to know that the position is really quite satisfactory. There are 961 full-time health visitors and 700 part-time health visitors, a total of 1,661, and they equal on a whole-time basis the 1,200 health visitors, which was the number recommended in the Working Party's Report.
