HC Deb 18 November 1958 vol 595 cc992-3
19. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will now authorise the expenditure on the harbour at Girvan.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon Friend is not yet in a position to offer assistance for the Girvan harbour improvement scheme. He has already authorised dredging at a cost of £17,030, of which the Scottish Home Department will bear 90 per cent., and repairs at a cost of £4,000, of which the Department will bear 75 per cent.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

Is the Minister aware that this is a very commendable scheme which would provide work for the growing number of local unemployed? Now that the banks have to some extent abolished restrictions on credit, could not the town council be helped in some way?

Mr. Macpherson

Yes, Sir, but there are many commendable schemes with Maims to be considered and I think that we have gone quite a long way already in authorising the dredging and repairs. We have certainly not lost sight of the improvement scheme for the harbour.
