§ 6. Mr. Osborneasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation when he expects to start building the direct road from Immingham to Grimsby, which has been under consideration since 1923; what it will cost; and when it will be finished.
§ Mr. NugentThis road will not be a trunk road and therefore it will not be for us to build it. I am told that the most recent estimate of its cost is £400,000. At the moment I cannot say when we shall be able to make a grant towards it.
§ Mr. OsborneWhile the Minister is not going to build it directly, is not it a fact that the local authorities cannot build it without his financial help? Therefore, he cannot evade responsibility. Has the hon. Gentleman received any representations from local trade unions, who are very worried about the local railway being closed down before the big trunk road is opened?
§ Mr. NugentI am aware of the rumours that are going round about the future of the railway there, but we had better wait to see what happens before we take a further view of the situation.
