§ 37. Mr. de Freitasasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will consult with the Secretary of State for Air, with a view to devising a scheme for encouraging the training, up to private pilot's licence, in approved flying clubs, of more young men in order to provide a pool of pilots for military and civil aviation.
§ Mr. WatkinsonOn the whole I consider that it is better for young men to be selected and trained directly to a professional standard at a school staffed and equipped for the purpose, and I discussed such a scheme with the Chairmen of the Air Corporations last week. I hope that a decision will be reached soon.
§ Mr. de FreitasDoes the right hon. Gentleman realise that there is a grave danger of there being a serious shortage of young pilots in a few years' time? Is he aware that the Government's decision to abolish the petrol tax rebate will make it very difficult and almost impossible for any young man without private means to learn to fly?
§ Mr. WatkinsonThat is another matter.
