§ 33. Mr. Liptonasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what action he is taking to ensure that driving instructors are properly qualified.
§ Mr. NugentThe driving test is the final arbiter of a driving instructor's qualification to teach.
We are considering further is needed.
§ Mr. LiptonWill the hon. Gentleman speed up this consideration? Is he aware that any Tom, Dick or Harry can call himself a driving instructor? Has he seen reports of serious accidents in which so-called driving instructors have been involved while in the course of giving instruction to learners? Is not it time that something was done to remedy a widespread abuse?
§ Mr. NugentThis matter was very carefully considered by the Road Safety Committee in 1947 when it was decided that it was not necessary to do anything further. A sub-committee of the Departmental Road Safety Committee is now considering the matter, and I have asked it to expedite its consideration.
