§ 31. Mr. Willeyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take action to remove the liability to tax which arises on any surplus on the accounts of the Sugar Board.
Mr. AmoryNo, Sir. Public corporations which carry on trading activities are subject to the same general system of taxation as other trading concerns.
§ Mr. WilleyAs this anomaly may affect the policy of the Board, will the Chancellor, as the author of the Sugar Act, look at this again to see whether it would be better to avoid such an anomaly?
Mr. AmoryAs the hon. Gentleman knows, the matter was considered carefully at the time when the legislation went through this House. Nothing that has happened since causes me to think that the decision made at that time was wrong.
