HC Deb 11 November 1958 vol 595 c182
33. Sir F. Medlicott

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in order to assist those desiring to purchase houses for their own occupation, he will now consider the abolition of Stamp Duty on mortgages.

Mr. Amory

I have noted my hon. Friend's suggestion.

Sir F. Medlicott

Is not there a slight inconsistency in the present situation? Since conveyances and transfers of up to £3,500 have been exempted, is not there an even stronger case for exempting mortgages as well?

Mr. Amory

As my hon. Friend knows, conveyances and mortgages are two different things, but I will note the suggestion he has made.
